About Build Tours
Build Tours was founded to offer a different way of experiencing cities — one that values attention, insight, and meaning over speed or spectacle. Our experiences invite people to slow down, look closely, and discover the stories embedded in buildings, streets, and public spaces.
What began as architect-led walks through New York has grown into a curated collection of public, private, academic, and corporate experiences, each designed to change how people see the city — and often, how they see cities everywhere.
Our Philosophy
We believe cities are best understood on foot, through conversation, and through lived observation.
Rather than presenting architecture as a list of facts or landmarks, our experiences focus on:
-
How buildings shape daily life
-
How history, power, and culture leave physical traces
-
How cities evolve — and why that matters today
Every experience is designed as a narrative, not an itinerary.
Architect-Led and Curated
All Build Tours experiences are led by architects and urban design professionals with deep knowledge of New York’s built environment.
Our guides are not performers or scripted presenters. They are trained professionals who:
-
Read the city critically
-
Adapt content to the audience
-
Encourage dialogue and questions
-
Balance expertise with accessibility
The result is an experience that feels intelligent, personal, and grounded.
Who We Work With
We regularly work with:
-
Curious travelers and private clients
-
Universities, schools, and academic programs
-
Corporate teams and executive groups
-
Cultural institutions and international delegations
Across all formats, our role remains the same: to interpret the city with care and clarity.

The way to know a city is through one’s feet.
Joseph Lengeling, AIA
Core Guide
Joseph moved to New York following graduate school at Cornell University and planned a two-year stint to pursue his architectural career before returning to his roots in the Midwest. His plan didn’t work out so well as he quickly fell in love with the city and has lived here now for over 40 years practicing for award winning firms including Mitchell/Giurgola, Cooper Robertson, and FXFowle.
Today, while still a practicing architect he now is “practicing retirement” so more of his time is spent developing virtual tours and walking tours, capitalizing on the many streets and sites he has traversed during his life in New York. Special areas of interest include the development of NYC parks, skyscrapers, Midtown modernism, the High Line and the development of the waterfront.
Teaching was always integral to Joseph’s career and his tours weave lively stories of history, biography, design, and current events with a passion that reveals his love of architecture. He is a registered architect and licensed NYC Sightseeing Guide.
